Taipei, February 7, 2025 – For the first time, contemporary Czech literature took center stage at the 2025 Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE). The event, "Encounters with Modern Czech Literature," was organized by Czech Centre Taipei and featured renowned Czech authors Marek Torčík and Magdaléna Platzová, with Jonáš Zbořil moderating the discussion. The panel provided Taiwanese readers with an in-depth look at contemporary Czech literature, insights into the creative process, and a discussion on how literary works resonate with international audiences.

Marek Torčík emphasized that as a writer, he sees literature as a dialogue with readers, regardless of the language his works are translated into. He believes that different geographical and cultural backgrounds naturally shape diverse interpretations of a story. "You may dislike certain authors, certain works, or certain writing styles," he said, "but the most important thing in writing is finding your own voice."

When asked whether her books are interpreted differently by readers from different countries, Magdaléna Platzová humorously responded that she was relieved her works hadn’t been published in too many languages yet. Although she hadn’t received much feedback from international readers, she expressed her hope that her writing could have a positive impact on those who read it.

Beyond the discussion, a heartwarming moment unfolded when three young boys from Hualien Haixing Elementary School (海星國小) approached the authors after the panel, eagerly requesting a photo together. With the help of professional interpreters, the children shared their enthusiasm for the authors’ works, engaging in a lively and meaningful exchange. The interaction transcended both language and age barriers, proving that literature knows no borders. Many attendees were deeply moved by the scene, calling it an unforgettable moment of connection.

This year’s TIBE not only introduced Czech literature to Taiwanese readers but also showcased how books have the power to create meaningful cross-cultural interactions, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
